About Choices

Choices can help if you:

  • Would like to get a job or prepare to get a job
  • Need support to develop skills to improve your employability and increase your job opportunities
  • Need support to identify and address issues and barriers which are preventing you from getting a job (e.g. low expectations and aspirations / lack of confidence and self-esteem / mental health and well being issues / debt and finance / drug and alcohol abuse / relationship breakdown / family issues etc.)

The project offers a range of support, tailored to your needs. On average we would expect you to spend between six and 12 months working with us.

Choices can offer:

Employment training

  • Interview skills / CV writing / career guidance and planning / job search / local labour market information / communication and problem solving skills / teamwork / skills awareness and sector specific training
  • Help with finding work or volunteering opportunities, including support to fill in application forms and attend interviews or volunteering meetings
  • Ongoing support when you are in work/volunteering

Self development
Sessions to develop confidence, self-esteem, assertiveness, motivation, self-efficacy, resilience.

Skills training

  • Qualifications including IT skills, social care certificates, first aid etc.
  • Referral to specialist learning provision e.g. Maths and English, NVQ qualifications.

Referral to other support
We can put you in touch with specialist support services (e.g: Citizens Advice Bureau, NHS Talking Changes, Children’s Centres, Credit Union etc.)

One-to-one support
You will receive intensive one-to-one support, mentoring, advocacy to help you achieve your goals.

Help with travel and childcare costs

We will support you to attend project appointments, activities or job interviews etc.

Is it for me?

To take part you must be:

  • Unemployed for more than one year
  • Living in Darlington
  • Over 17 years old
  • Not in full time education

Funding details

The Choices project is funded by Lloyds Bank Foundation and Morrison Trust. The project is currently funded up to the end of March 2018.
